Separate facts, requests and deadlines.
- 01
Preserve the complete packet
Keep envelopes, service papers and every page in order. Do not write over the original documents.
- 02
Identify the case and court
Confirm names, case number, county, division and whether another family or protection case already exists.
- 03
Find the controlling response instruction
Read the summons and official response instructions. Do not use a general internet estimate as the deadline.
- 04
Compare every requested order
List what is requested about the marriage, children, property, debts, support, fees, names and temporary relief.
- 05
Prepare the correct response path
A formal response, appearance, answer, counter-request or agreement process may be different. Verify filing and service requirements.
- 06
Track what actually happens
Record filing acceptance, delivery of copies, hearings and orders only after each event occurs.
