This page organizes the recorded statewide starting rules and official sources for Tennessee. Court location, local forms, fees, service, deadlines and individual eligibility still require confirmation before filing.

STATE SNAPSHOT
Timing and financial issues need separate review.
TIMING
Minimum period or timing rule
The official indexed 2025 compilation states that irreconcilable-differences cases must be on file for at least 60 days without an unmarried child under 18, or 90 days if there is such a child, before hearing. Current 2026 statutory timing was not directly confirmed; check the current law and hearing instructions. These periods do not promise completion.
PROPERTY & DEBTS
Classification and division
Property and debt classification and division must be separately verified under local law.

PREPARATION ROADMAP
Use this order before filing.
01
Confirm residence and filing eligibility
Current 2026 statutory verification is incomplete. Official indexed 2025 law and earlier court opinions support a domicile-and-grounds route and a 6-month residence route involving either spouse. Confirm the current statutory branch, where and when the grounds arose, military provisions and county venue; approved simple-form eligibility is a separate test. Record actual dates and do not combine two people’s residence periods unless the controlling rule expressly allows it.
02
Identify the correct court and county
Use the official statewide source to locate the trial court or clerk. Confirm venue, the family-law filing location, accepted filing method, current fee and required local packet.
03
Select the procedure that matches the facts
Check whether the state distinguishes regular, joint, simplified, summary, contested or uncontested procedures. Agreement alone does not prove eligibility for a shorter procedure.
04
Collect the facts requested by the forms
Prepare legal names, marriage and separation dates, residence history, children’s information, income, expenses, assets, debts, requested relief and existing orders.
05
Prepare opening documents without inventing events
Complete only facts you know. Leave clerk, court, signature, notarization, service and later-event fields for the correct person and stage.
06
File and complete valid notice
A draft or download is not a filed case. Follow the clerk’s instructions and record service or waiver only after the legally effective event occurs.
07
Address disclosure, children and unresolved issues
Use current financial, child-jurisdiction, parenting and support documents. Settlement terms should match the procedure and be reviewed before rights are waived.
08
Obtain and review the final judgment
A waiting or separation period does not itself end a marriage. Confirm entry and the effective date from the court’s signed or entered order.
RESIDENCE CHECK
Which spouse meets Tennessee’s residence-and-grounds connection, including the usual 6-month route where applicable?
Current 2026 primary-text verification remains incomplete. The official 2025 government compilation and older appellate opinions distinguish a bona fide Tennessee-resident plaintiff when the complained-of acts occurred from the six-month residence route involving either spouse. Residence means domicile in the cited judicial discussion. Confirm the current statutory branch, military provisions and county venue before relying on this question; simple-form eligibility is separate.
This intake question helps organize facts; it does not decide domicile, jurisdiction or venue for an individual case.
IMPORTANT STATE NOTES
Questions to verify before relying on a packet
The Supreme Court-approved agreed-divorce packets with and without children have additional scope requirements; they are not automatically suitable for every agreed case.
A Permanent Parenting Plan and child-support documents may be required in cases with children.
Blount County’s local requirements for additional forms, education and hearings do not apply identically to every county.
The official form portal required browser verification during the review; titles were checked through the search index and official court PDF records.
